भारतn nationalism developed through anti-colonial struggles that brought diverse groups into a wider political movement. इस अध्याय में focuses on the First World War context, Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience, different social groups and the making of a shared national identity.

War, Khilafat and Non-Cooperation

The post-war period saw economic hardship and political repression. Gandhi linked the Khilafat issue and the Non-Cooperation movement to broader anti-colonial mobilisation.

Satyagraha

Gandhian satyagraha emphasised truth, non-violence and mass participation. Local struggles such as Champaran, Kheda and Ahmedabad helped build political mobilisation.

Rowlatt Act and Jallianwala Bagh

Repressive colonial measures and the massacre at Jallianwala Bagh deepened opposition to British rule.

Civil Disobedience

The Salt March and the Civil Disobedience Movement challenged colonial laws. Participation varied across regions and social groups.

Different groups and expectations

Peasants, business groups, workers, tribals and women participated in different ways and often had distinct expectations from the national movement.

Sense of collective belonging

Symbols, folklore, reinterpretation of history, flags and images of Bharat Mata helped construct a shared national identity, while also revealing limits and differences.
