French Revolution and nation
The Revolution introduced ideas of citizenship, equality before law and collective national identity. Administrative and legal changes helped create a sense of a common national territory.
Liberalism and conservatism

Prussia led German unification under Otto von Bismarck through diplomacy and wars. The German Empire was proclaimed in 1871.
Balkan nationalism
The decline of Ottoman control and competing national aspirations in the Balkans created tensions. Nationalism became connected with rivalry and imperial interests.
